Jordan Garay on Being a Student

These days, being a college student involves more than hitting the books.  Employers expect to hire graduating college seniors who have some experience in the world as well as the workplace.  A high GPA no longer guarantees one a fairly decent job.  More and more, experience that highlights character is becoming increasingly important.  Like so many of his classmates, Jordan Garay finds being a college student challenging, but he hasn’t let that distract him.

Instead, Jordan has worked to make being a student a way to develop himself and his goals.  Although he’s focused on the academic side of his education, he’s equally vested in the life experiences that build character.  He’s become a proponent of community involvement, donating to charities.  He is particularly drawn to those organizations that support medical research.

He has also focused on building his character through sports.  He’s used the opportunities that come with training and bettering oneself as a competitor to better himself as a person.  He firmly believes that the same discipline required to be an athlete translates into the classroom through schoolwork.  Sometimes weekends are filled with hundreds of pages of reading and several papers worth of homework.  Completing assignments well and on time is essential to academic success.  The same can be said for athletes.  Athletes must be ready for a competition.  They must prepare themselves both mentally and physically.

Jordan Garay is a great example of a renaissance student.  He’s enveloped the world around him and incorporated it into academic success.  By doing this, he has built a character with a story that future prospective employers will be able to read.  In having a better understanding of who Jordan Garay is as a person, the company that hires him can be confident that it’s hiring someone who is a great fit.
